Weight Concerns

Some people are put off quitting because they are worried about putting on weight.

People sometimes put on weight because:

  • Nicotine suppresses your natural appetite and makes your body burn calories faster
  • Smoking affects your taste and smell, so food seems to taste better when you stop.
  • They replace cigarettes with snacks and sweets, or change their normal diet.

To avoid putting on weight, try:

  • To watch what you eat and stay away from high calorie and fried foods.
  • To exercise. This will help keep your weight down and help you beat the cravings.
  • Starting a healthy eating programme at the same time as you when you stop.
  • NRT and Zyban delay weight gain.

Remember:

  • Once you have stopped smoking, you will find it easier to be active and lose weight.
  • You can control your weight by maintaining a diet high in fruit and vegetables and keeping active.
  • Exercise doesn't need to be complicated - try taking the stairs instead of the lift, or take a walk during your lunch break.
